This entire area of Dorset is steeped in centuries of history dating back to the early 12th century. A rival town for trade and industry which lays across the north of the harbour on the peninsula called Melcombe Regis and was established first as a licensed wool port in 1310. The gripping history is both legendary and infamous; in fact it is thought to be the first port at which the Black Death came into England on either an army ship or spice ship. King Henry VIII built two device forts and Sandsfoot Castle to protect the South Dorset coast from invasion, parts of the castle can still be seen today the rest has fallen to the sea due to coastal erosion.
In 1635 more than 100 people from Weymouth travelled across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas to help bolster the population of their sister city Weymouth, Salem and Nova Scotia, memorials of these explorers are found on side of Weymouth Harbour. US soldiers used Weymouth as base during Second World War and boarded their landing ships to be included in the 1944 invasion of France but not before they marched along the promenade waved off by the grateful locals. Today this Georgian promenade is the location of many of the Weymouth guest houses, all visible in many black and white photos taken during this time.
